Artist in Residence: Panem Et Circenses

19. September 2020

As part of the Artist in Residence program at Villa Arnica, the artist collective Panem Et Circenses from Bologna was hosted from September 13th to 19th, 2020. Founded in Berlin in 2012 by Ludovico Pensato and Alessandra Ivul, the collective employs participatory practices to explore the relationship between humans and their environment. Their relational installations and performances focus on food and Earth's resources.

They began their residency with a ritual among the trees in Lana's biotope. The public gathering was led by Maori medicine woman Sammanawa, accompanied by curator Silvia Petrucci. The central question was: "Are you aware of your symbiotic connection?"

During the week, Panem et Circenses collected several soil samples from selected trees, including those in the garden of Villa Arnica, on Vigiljoch mountain, and in the biotope, using them to create round filter chromatograms.

The artwork that Panem Et Circences created during their stay can be seen in room nine of Villa Arnica.
